He is the only male throughout the film who shows caring for either of them. Hal cares about what happens to the girls. Shot of Hal's face with an expression of concern looking straight down the camera giving us the impression he is looking and Thelma and Louise.(The music always plays at important parts of the film.) The death involves lots of camera shots and changing angles and some slow motion which I shall now list below to avoid confusion. The music has had clips playing throughout the film and we recognise it instantly as an important part of the film. ![]() Also the moving gospel like music which plays louder and with more harmony as Thelma and Louise get closer to the cliff edge. We then view their death which is all silent except for Max yelling, 'Hey!' at Hal as he runs towards the car just before it speeds off over the cliff edge. The audience is deeply moved by this as we admire them for having such courage and love for each other as to kill themselves. You as the audience know that they will not live and we feel sad because we have been wanting them to escape all the way through the film but then we also feel a great sense of joy that they won't get caught they are going to commit suicide and end their life on a happy note instead of a hanging.Īfter the dialogue Louise kisses Thelma and this demonstrates the bond between them which has been so strong, but still grown, throughout the film. ![]() This is the last thing we hear Thelma and Louise say in the film and it has strong significance. Thelma: "Lets keep goin' (pause and there is a CU camera shot of Louise's shocked face) Go." They would rather die than give up and surrender to the men in the forces and have to stand trial and be hanged for murder. Thelma comes up with an idea of throwing themselves off the cliff. Louise replies, "I'm not givin' up." Thelma realises that Louise will try escaping using violence and realises she will be out numbered and they will both get shot. Louise then starts to load her gun and Thelma asks what she is doing. I have drawn a diagram to help explain my point: Bad Good In the middle Thelma and Louise are stuck deciding what to do (give up or try and escape somehow), however the car is facing the cliff and away from the police so this indicates that they may have already made their decision. On one side of Thelma and Louise in the car you have the beautiful Grand Canyon, whereas on the other side you have the police line and capture. Thelma and Louise are told to shut the car engine down and place their hands in plain view and that any inability to do so will be considered an act of violence against the police.Īt this point you can see the strong oppositions in the setting and this reflects Thelma and Louise's point of view and decision about their situation. Look's like the army!' and Louise say, 'All this for us!' Louise is astonished that anyone could ever pay this much attention to her even considering what they have done. Again Thelma and Louise's dialogue is important here. The helicopter flies behind the cars and lands, Hal and Max exit it. As the helicopter flies over tem Louise turns the car around and tries to run quickly coming to a stop and realising the huge convoy of police cars surrounding them and trapping them in a semi circle again the cliff. The helicopter is black and symbolises the good verses evil of the modern western film. Then Thelma and Louise look at each other and the helicopter comes up from in the canyon taking them by surprise. There is a slight pause in dialogue and movement, except the camera on a static shot of Thelma's face starring out in awe at the canyon. ![]() ![]() The audience see how beautiful the canyon is. Thelma says, 'Isn't it beautiful?' Louise responds, 'Yeah, it's somethin' else alright.' The camera pans around the canyon as if it was in the car and it is as if we are seeing through Thelma and Louise's eyes. The next dialogue as the camera pans round the canyon is of Thelma and Louise's amazement at its beauty. Thelma's question also illustrates how little she was allowed out of the house when she was living with Darrell. The dialogue between Thelma and Louise, 'What the hell is this?' 'I think it's the God damned Grand Canyon,' demonstrates their disbelief at how close they came to falling to their death. Louise slams on the breaks and manages to stop the car just before going off the edge. In the beginning of this scene Thelma and Louise are driving and they suddenly come to a cliff edge. The focus of this essay on film language is mise-en-scene and sound/dialogue and how it is used to create meaning and generate response. In this essay I will be analysing the closing sequence of the film 'Thelma and Louise' written by Callie Khouri and directed by Ridley Scott. ![]() Gilberto’s final live performance was a 2008 celebration of the 50th anniversary of bossa nova. Gilberto’s last studio album João Voz e Violão – produced by Caetano Veloso, one of the many Brazilian artists influenced by Gilberto – was released in 2000 the album won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. In the ensuing decades, Gilberto continued to record and explore the bossa nova genre until the early Nineties, when his output ceased and the guitarist became, according to the Brazilian media, a recluse. “When people started to think that he was a bossa nova singer of Brazilian tunes, he challenged their assumptions by applying his style to boleros, Italian songs, Gershwin and later to the pop music of Brazil.” Several others tried to imitate him, with no success,” pianist Jovino Santos Neto told NPR Saturday. “His uncanny ability to syncopate his vocal delivery, while keeping a simple groove was his trademark sound. Getz/Gilberto also placed at Number 447 on Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. ![]() Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd’s chart-topping bossa nova-inspired Jazz Samba was released in 1962 the following year, Gilberto moved to the United States and, soon after, the guitarist collaborated with Getz on what would become Gilberto’s most acclaimed and popular album. Gilberto’s bossa nova began to reach American audiences thanks to its appearance on the soundtrack for the 1959 film Black Orpheus, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film that year. Soon after in his native Brazil, Gilberto scored a huge hit in 1959 with a cover of “Chega de Saudade.” According to NPR, Gilberto developed the sound while ensconced in a bathroom at his sister’s house, crafting bossa nova by playing off the bathroom’s tiled acoustics. Gilberto is considered the progenitor of bossa nova, or “new beat,” a subgenre of the Brazilian samba that scaled back that style’s percussion and arrangements. He tried to maintain his dignity in the light of losing his independence.” No cause of death was provided. Gilberto’s son João Marcelo Gilberto confirmed his father’s death Saturday in Rio de Janeiro in a Facebook post, “His struggle was noble. ![]() João Gilberto, the pioneering Brazilian musician and composer credited as “the father of bossa nova,” has died at the age of 88. ![]() Setting the Z-scale to 0.385 for example will make the prism 0. Raimondo’s focus on building the state’s military-based economy, including her awarding of millions of dollars in subsidies to nuclear-armed submarine maker Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, a Fortune 100 company and one of the nation’s largest Pentagon contractors. When Roselli and I sat down recently to discuss his campaign, we began by talking about Gov. But, Roselli says, his message has since broadened, and his goal is to fix Rhode Island’s transportation, healthcare, economic and environmental challenges through a “holistic” approach no longer stuck in the 1940s. Gina Raimondo says his decision to enter the race was initially inspired by his disappointment in Raimondo’s “arrogant” and disingenuous response to the concerns of Burrillville activists opposed to the power plant and her acceptance of campaign contributions connected to Invenergy, the Chicago-based company behind the project. Prior to announcing his candidacy last September, Roselli was best known as a leading opponent of the fracked gas power plant in Burrillville, where Roselli runs a local land trust. Now he wants to add the title Governor of Rhode Island to that list. Breakfast on the cliffs was a treat we looked forward to everyday. We had reservations at several other high end hotel restaurants In the area, from what we saw of these accommodations The Cliff Hotel was the BEST. Staff greeted you with smiles and tended to our needs with enthusiasm, our comfort was their number one priority. The front desk staff arranged all of our transportation and outings, everything went on seamlessly which took a lot off of our plate as far as planning and left us more time to ENJOY! The rooms are big with great amenities. We had our 5 month old in tow and felt VERY comfortable. They also took care of our return COVID testing requirements, a huge relief for us. A private nurse came onsite to take care of us. Located on Jamaica’s San San Estate, this tropical retreat lies on the beautiful shores of the Caribbean Sea. It features a spa, an on-site recording studio and a restaurant. We ordered the breakfast as room service and it was one of the highlights of the day! Fresh juice, blue mountain coffee, fresh fruit overlooking a breath taking view - just a magical way to start the day! (Pocket change, yes, in comparison to the Pebble.) The idea for the LowLine is to take a 1.5 acre abandoned trolley terminal on the Lower East Side and to turn it into what co-founders Dan Barasch and James Ramsey were, at least initially, calling a park. The example of Kickstarter urbanism par excellence is Delancey Underground, aka the LowLine, which raised $155,000 on Kickstarter earlier this year. Gizmo is close to gimmick, and worthy goals have to be dressed up in complex geometries for Kickstarter. You can’t Kickstart affordable housing, but the really cool tent for the discussion thereof. You wouldn’t Kickstart a replacement bus line for Brooklyn, but you might Kickstart an app to tell you when the bus on another, less convenient line might come. And that’s just what’s happening on Kickstarter. Urbanism would lose out to industrial design. Critic Reyner Banham, in the oft-quoted essay “The Great Gizmo” posited that it wasn’t massive infrastructure projects that changed our world, but devices. Second, they access hot-button urban topics: rooftop farms, reclaimed railroads, (self-reflexively) urban conversation itself. What do these projects have in common? First, they are in famous cities. Uni, a portable open-air reading room for New York. A plastic tent for a livability conference in Prague. ![]() Most of the Kickstarter projects under the Design tab congregate around the themes of bikes, cheese, typography and iAnything, yet there is now a subset of urban interventions. The expectations, the timeline, the relevant community are all wildly different. (Here’s Rob Walker’s New York Times Magazine story on the site, “The Trivialities and Transcendence of Kickstarter,” which goes into all the details.) A suitable funding platform for a watch is not a suitable funding platform for a city. Their declaration of a glorious new era for design suggests that projects that aren’t Kickstarter worthy aren’t worthy. Kickstarter’s editorial teams selects which projects go on the blog. Kickstarter is not a popularity contest, or a democracy. ![]() And more types of projects, design not just for the wrist, started to try to get in on the action. Stories late last year (later debunked) suggested that Kickstarter would soon fund more creative activity than the National Endowment for the Arts. But on the flipside, if Kickstarter could make industrial designers’ dreams come true, who was I to question it?īut then it mushroomed. In the future, Kickstarter seemed to me to suggest, the socially awkward and untelegenic need not apply. Relentless working of social media and casual contacts. A video, not too slick, but not too amateur. The process required to be a Kickstarter success, now summarized and codified on many other websites, reflects this consumer focus. And if you were lucky, one of the reward system built into the fundraising meant you would be the first to hear, see, read or use the production in question. Kickstarter combined fundraising with opinion polling, marketing with grant-writing. McGregor’s post was titled “A New Era for Design.” It made sense to ask the people of the internet for money, because they were not only your investors, they wanted to be your customers. Part of what I consider will eventually be a common way for individuals, DIYers, small groups and aspiring entrepreneurs to realize their dreams. As Scott Wilson professes in his first project update, “I believe this is a significant milestone in product development history. We knew nothing of the production process, or who the device’s authors might be. (Watch the numbers grow on this nifty New York Times graphic.) Two thousand five hundred people contributed to the TikTok in its first three days on Kickstarter and, as Michael McGregor wrote on the Kickstarter blog in November 2010,įor as long as we can remember products just appeared. This year’s version, an e-paper watch named Pebble, raised $7 million. Need the studio time to record your next album? Need the printing costs to produce your first book? Need to make prototypes for the next big X, Y or Z? The big design success story was the TikTok band, which turned your iPod Nano into a wristwatch, and raised almost one million dollars on the site. When Kickstarter launched in 2009 as the “funding platform for creative projects” most of the projects were small in scale and consumer in intention. |
